Founded
in 1893 by Hannah G. Solomon, the National Council of Jewish Women
is the oldest national Jewish women’s volunteer organization
in America. The National Council of Jewish Women, St. Paul (NCJW)
became a charter member and in the late 19th century provided training,
education and shelter for young immigrant women, advocated for
child labor laws, arranged child care for immigrant families and
provided services to help the disadvantaged.
NCJW
St. Paul is an all-volunteer organization. Our Board has made
a commitment to use our funds for community purposes, thus
we will continue to operate with no paid staff. We have 32
members on our Board, including 12 officers. Our current roster
includes approximately 600 members, over 100 of them being
very active volunteers.
We
have a long-standing relationship with community partners throughout
St. Paul. Highlights of past NCJW projects include:
- Shalom Outreach Services (now Jewish Domestic Abuse Collaborative) addresses domestic abuse in the Jewish community
- The
McKinley Pre-School Project, which supported and influenced
the development of Head Start in St. Paul.
- Counselors
Aide Program at Mechanics Arts High School which provided
guidance and established a career resource center.
- TLC – Teaching
Language Communications, a program to teach newly arrived
Hmong children the English language.
- Children
Are People, a drug education program to improve self-image
of elementary school children.
- The
Holocaust Project, which brought the history of the Holocaust
and the lesson of tolerance and the value of diversity to
students.
- For
Our Daughters, a Breast Cancer Awareness series provided
by NCJW, United Hospitals and the St. Paul J.C.C.
- Ready-
Set- Grow, education and self-esteem program for 3-5 year
olds.
- Teaching
Tolerance, a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center,
an educational program for students to lessen the incidence
of hate and prejudice. Tolerance Minnesota, a state-wide
educational program, has adopted this project.
